On immigrants

Friday, October 27, 2006

I AM BECOMING disturbed by the number of illegal immigrants entering the United States.

I am not speaking about our Mexican-American neighbors who come here legally, looking for work and a better way of life. As a matter of fact, we need more than a few of them.

Families that I have observed keep their yards and surroundings neat and clean. Their children are neat and clean. They laugh and sing as they ride their bikes and play on their trampolines.

We do resent those who sneak across our borders into our country, by-passing our laws and regulations and shirking their responsibilities.

I do not like border fences; I think fences can be circumvented.

I believe that we should work on the other end of the problem. Legal I.D.s and work orders are surely necessary.

I refuse to believe that any employer who hires an illegal immigrant should not be fined. Not a “slap on the wrist” fine, but a substantial monetary fine. Neither do I believe that our Federal Government cannot devise a way to detect a fake I.D. or work order from a legitimate one.

I also believe that no one who does not apply for United States citizenship should pay Social Security taxes, because only U.S. citizens should receive Social Security.

I also believe that no Social Security checks should go out of the United States, with few exceptions.

I believe that all immigrants should be required to apply for U.S. citizenship, learn to speak English, fulfill their responsibility and really enjoy our great country, or return to their homeland, be it Mexico or Somalia.
