EHS cheer squad raking

Members of the EHS Festival Cheer Squad will rake leaves in the Coronado Hills area from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. On Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 5, they will be in the Country Club Heights area. They will go to other locations if requested. They will provide rakes and trash bags, but customers will be responsible for disposal of the leaves. The cheerleaders are asking for a minimum donation of $10 a yard to help buy uniforms. NLYCA Octoberfest

The 1st Annual NLCYA Octoberfest will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday in Allen at the 108 E. Seventh (renovated Allen Grade School). The menu will feature Bad ol’ Bern’s Barbecue, baked potatoes, green beans, homemade rolls, dessert and beverage. Music will be played by local disc jockey Josh Reece. Free will donations will be accepted.

Harvest supper and auction

The Saffordville United Methodist Church Harvest Supper and Auction will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Toledo Township Community Center, formerly the Saffordville schoolhouse, west of Emporia on Highway 50. Chicken and homemade noodles, meatballs, vegetables, salads, rolls, pies and beverages will be served. The auction will be for crafts and other items, candies and baked goods and specialty baskets. The cost for adults is $7.50 at the door; and $3 for children three to 12 years.

Carnival

Emporia Aerie and Auxiliary 2587 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1130 E. Ninth Ave., will hold their 18th annual Carnival from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday to benefit the local Emporians for Drug Awareness Program. There will be games, door prizes, a cakewalk, face painting and the “popular” haunted house. At 2 p.m., there will be a costume contests for five age groups, from birth to adult. Foods include hot dogs, 75 cents; chili dogs, $1.25; chili and potato soup, $1.50; chili pies, $1.75; barbecue sandwiches, $1.75; nachos, $1.50; cookies, 50 cents; soda, coffee and tea., 50 cents each.

Hay give-away

The Humane Society of the Flint Hills is sponsoring the annual Hay Give-Away from 8 a.m. until noon Nov. 4 (or until hay is gone) in the parking lot of the East Emporia Veterinary Clinic, 602 Exchange St. The hay, donated by Walter and Helen Tredway, is to provide warmth and insulation for outdoor pets. It is not for feed. Because of the shortage of hay this year, hay will be rationed. Information: 342-4477.

Cross-country barbecue

Members of the Emporia High School Cross Country team are taking orders for barbecue ribs and sides of Fanestil baked beans and homemade potato salad, which they will deliver within city limits between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Nov. 12 (in time for the Chiefs vs. Dolphins football game). The cost is $13 for a slab of ribs with each of the sides available for $3 a pound. Orders, needed by Nov. 8, can be made by calling 342-2872 or 342-9552. Proceeds will be used to help finance the state meets.

Student raising money

A fund-raiser Saturday at Long John Silver’s will help Jimmy Page, a sixth grader at Lowther North and son of John and Cynthia Page, raise money to study in Canada with the People to People ambassador program. The restaurant is donating 20 percent of purchases by customers with a special flyer. Jimmy needs to raise $3,399 for his trip. A benefit fund also is set up at Commerce Bank & Trust.
