Expert on lying to speak at ESU — really!

Why do people in close relationships lie to each other? What types of lies are told in close relationships? Can you tell if your partner in a close relationship is lying to you? To learn answers to these questions and others regarding honesty in close relationships, please attend the23rd Annual George R.R. Pflaum Lecture.
Dr. Mark L. Knapp of the University of Texas at Austin and an expert on lying and deception will present an informative and entertaining presentation on, “Lying and Deception in Close Relationships” Thursday, November 2, at 7:00 p.m. in Visser Hall room 330 on the Emporia State University campus.
Knapp is the Jesse H. Hones Centennial Professor of Communication and University of Texas Distinguished Teaching Professor. His areas of teaching and research include lying and deception, nonverbal communication, and interpersonal relationships. The National Communication Association recently awarded Dr. Knapp the Donald H. Ecroyd Award for Outstanding Teaching in Higher Education.
The Pflaum Lecture is named after George Pflaum, a speech professor who taught for over 40 years, developing many of ESU's premiere programs, including the Debate Team, the Homecoming Scholarship Musical and the ESU Summer Stock Theatre.
The lecture is sponsored by the Departments of Communication and Theatre, Psychology and special Education, Lambda Pi Eta, the College of Liberal Arts and Science and ESU Special Events. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, call 620-341-5256.
