Service academy board

U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran has reappointed Ron Whitney of Emporia to the First District Service Academy Appointment Board. Moran also made a new appointment to the board, Steve Harmon of Emporia.

The board reviews application and interviews candidates for academy appointments.

Community supper

The Mound Ridge Community Supper will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Mound Ridge Community Center. Those attending are to take a covered dish; beverages will be provided. There will be a program.

Broadview trick or treat

Residents of the Broadview Towers, 110 W. Sixth Ave., will distribute Halloween candy between 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday inside the front doors.

Melvern festival

The Melvern Fall Festival begins at 7 a.m. Saturday with a pancake feed at the City Hall until 10 a.m., sponsored by the Sunflower 4-H Fair Board. The Craft Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Melvern Community Center. From 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the center, there will be face painting. At noon, the 4-H will have a lunch counter at the center. The Halloween Costume Parade will be from 4 to 5 p.m., after which there will be a ham and bean feed at the center until 7 p.m. After dinner, there will be hayrides and a haunted house. Churches will provide cookies and hot chocolate after the hayrides.

Church fall festival

The Flint Hills Christian Church will have its annual fall festival for children from 3 years through sixth grade from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Harvest House behind the church, 1836 E. Highway 50. Costumes are welcome, but “no scary ones, please.”

Events include live music, games, prizes, candy contests, bingo, a moonwalk, door prizes and balloons by Grandpa Pokey. Information: 342-0081.
