Opposes expansion

NOT MUCH has been said about redistricting the county if we have to elect five commissioners.
Redistricting is performed under Kansas statute. Therefore, you who might think you will get better representation with 5 commissioners could be in for a big, bad surprise. County traditionally has meant rural. I know — Emporia is part of the county even though the county is not a part of the city. Even city folk agree there is quite a difference between the needs, complaints and so forth of the two.
The city has five commissioners and a city manager to oversee city business. Therefore, it would only seem reasonable to have the county commissioners from the rural background. Well, reasonable isn’t always what we get. And with redistricting, I feel very confident in saying this — rural county commissioners will be a thing of the past.
So, less representation; more tax money for more commissioners; more tax money for a county administrator; I don’t think so. There must be a better and cheaper way to put a feather in the Chamber’s cap.
