Osage City volleyball earns State berth

The Osage City volleyball team earned its ticket to State on Saturday by sweeping three games at the 3A Regional in Eureka.

Osage City began Regional play with a 2-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-17) victory over Mission Valley in the quarterfinals. The Lady Indians then defeated Burlington, 2-1 (26-28, 26-24, 25-21) in the semifinals before moving on to sweep Pomona, 2-0 (25-17, 25-20), in the Championship.

Osage City (23-10), seeded eighth, will face No. 1-seed and undefeated Oberlin (31-0) in the first round of the State tournament on Friday at the Bicentennial Center in Salina. Osage City will meet Frontenac at 6:30 p.m., and at 8:30 p.m., the Lady Indians will face Wellsville.

The semifinal matches begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the consolation and championship matches beginning 25 minutes after the conclusion of the last semifinals.

Olpe volleyball enters State as No. 1 seed

The Olpe volleyball team will enter the Class 1A volleyball tournament as the top-ranked seed thanks to its 34-1 record.

Olpe, which won the Lyon County League tournament two weeks ago, will play No. 8-seed Linn (23-13) at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. The Eagles also will play at 5:30 p.m. against Sharon Springs and again at 7:30 p.m. against South Haven.

The semifinal matches begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, with the consolation and championship matches beginning 25 minutes after the conclusion of the last semifinals.

Olpe boys, girls earn trip to State

In Regional cross country action, the Olpe girls advanced to State as a team thanks to a second-place finish Saturday at the Bishop Carroll Regional. Olpe finished with 26 team points, just two points back of Regional champion, Goessel.

Sharon Zeller finished second in a time of 16:38 to lead three individual state qualifiers for the Olpe girls.

The Olpe boys also earned a trip to State with their third-place finished with 46 team points.

The Lyndon boys finished sixth while the girls placed fifth at Washington on Saturday. The boys finished with 119 points as a team, with Maranatha taking the team title with 29 points. The Lyndon girls came away with 132 points, while the Maranatha girls won with 32 points.

Lee powers Northern Heights to Regional win

Northern Heights’ Amy Lee finished third in a time of 17 minutes at Saturday’s 3A Regional at Central Heights to lead the Lady Wildcats to the Regional title and a trip to Wamego next Saturday for State.

Leslie Delcamp followed Lee at 10th (17:45), Bailey Ziegler finished 13th (18:10), Gesina Miller came in 21st (18:29) and Annie Adams finished 24th (18:41) to give the Wildcats all five scorers in the top 25.

Northern Heights finished with 60 points to beat out second-place Wellsville and third-place Jayhawk-Linn.

On the boys side, Northern Heights did not field a complete team, but Pete Symmonds finished ninth in a time of 17:53 to qualify individually for the State meet.
