Oppose proposals

Friday, October 20, 2006

WE REGISTERED VOTERS are against the proposed expansion of our Lyon County Commission to five members. We are certain of these facts. The change will result in:

1. Loss of rural representation in county affairs

2. Added cost to taxpayers

3. More difficulty in reaching a consensus on issues

Most of the business and industry in our county are dependent upon agriculture to some degree. Decisions affecting the rural population of the county will also affect the commercial industries of Emporia where these citizens work and do business. The county commission makes many decisions which directly affect the rural quality of life in this county. The rural population deserves an equal voice in county affairs. Also, the addition of two commissioners means the added cost of their salaries, plus the increased staffing required would cost taxpayers money. Not to mention the longer amount of time it will take to complete county business when five voices must be heard, rather than three.

Please vote to retain our three commissioner county commission. Help us retain our rural representation and keep the added costs of this proposal off everyone’s list Finally, let’s keep one institution intact that is NOT broken. Let us retain our THREE-COMMISSIONER Lyon County Commission.

I agree. It appears that this is just a ploy being promoted by the Emporia Chamber of Commerce to gain total control of the commission. I attended the League debates and as was pointed out, it is hard to see how hiring a manager and paying two more county commissioners is going to save money. Common sense says it will cost more and probably services to the outlying areas will be cut. Ever notice how the ditches around Emporia are mowed regularly, but my ditch outside one of the outlying towns is mowed once the entire year.
