Lt. governor forum
Emporia State University and the City of Emporia will host the 2006 Kansas Lieutenant Governor Forum, Oct. 24, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. in Plumb Hall's Albert Taylor Hall. Mark Parkinson, running mate for Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' and Sen. Susan Wagle, running mate for Sen. Jim Barnett will engage in an electrifying and informative forum to discuss the political issues most relevant to Kansas voters. The forum will be streamed live on the Internet. Lying and deception in relationships
Why do people in close relationships lie to each other? Can you tell if your partner is lying to you? To learn answers to these questions and others regarding honesty in close relationships, consider taking in the 23rd Annual George R.R. Pflaum Lecture. Dr. Mark L. Knapp of the University of Texas at Austin and an expert on lying and deception will present “Lying and Deception in Close Relationships” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, in Visser Hall Room 330 at ESU.
Bonner and Bonner lecturer
Vali R. Nasr, an expert in contemporary Middle Eastern affairs and the adjunct senior fellow for Middle Eastern Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, a nonpartisan think-tank, will be the Bonner and Bonner Diversity Lecture Series speaker on Feb. 13. In its 15th year, the Bonner and Bonner series is the premier diversity lecture series in Kansas. Nasr will present “The Shai Revival: How Conflicts with Islam will Shape the Future” at 7 p.m. Feb. 13 in Albert Taylor Hall at Emporia State University.
Astronaut lecture
George “Pinky” Nelson, a space shuttle astronaut and nationally known advocate for science education reform, will speak at Emporia State University at 7 p.m. Oct. 27, in Albert Taylor Hall, as the fall 2006 Jones Distinguished Lecturer. Nelson’s topic is “The View From Space: What’s it Like, Does it Change Your Perspective, and Why Do We Go?”
Gala music event
The 2006 Music Benefit Recital will feature guest artist and former Emporia State University music faculty member Scott Herring, marimba. The performance is scheduled for Saturday, October 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Heath Recital Hall in Beach Music Hall.
Step now or step down
Emporia State University’s Black Student Union is gearing up for its second annual Emporia Kansas Step Show.
A step show is an a capella, rehearsed, rhythm-based dance that involves chanting, clapping, stomping and moving in synchronization to create a musical beat. The show starts at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 in Albert Taylor Hall on ESU’s campus. Admission is one canned food item or $1 donation. All donations will go to the Emporia Salvation Army.
Teams that have already signed up include Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority, Beta Lambda Alpha Sorority, Chi Omega Sorority, and Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority.
