Some questions

Tuesday, October 17, 2006

I AM WRITING in response to the recent article in The Gazette where there was a county commission meeting discussing the addition of two new commissioners and the creation of a county administrator position. I am very appreciative of the commissioners from the other counties who were so kind to attend the meeting and offer their support of this referendum. I know that many people have invested a large amount of time and effort researching this issue. And I thank them for trying to make Lyon County a more efficiently-run community.

My concern is that there were no examples given by anyone at the meeting that showed how the five-person panel and the addition of the administrator would improve our level of management. I am a firm believer that bigger government isn’t always better government. Perhaps we should take baby steps with this issue instead of just throwing the frying pan into the fire so to speak. Maybe at this point we should simply add the administrator position and give our three commissioners a chance to work with the administrator to solve our problems. We could do this before adding more members to the panel.

As a voter, I would personally like to know how our population has grown over the last 10 years. As everyone is aware, when a community’s population grows, so does its demand for services. Services are what our commissioners provide to the citizens. Thank you for your time.
