Emergency personnel tend to the accident victims 14 miles east of Emporia Sunday in Coffey County after two vehicles collided in a construction zone. Both drivers died in the accident.

Interstate 35 in Coffey County saw a double fatality this weekend in a two-vehicle crash.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2002 Chevrolet Venture driven by Ralph L. Westland, 80 of Carlisle, Iowa, was southbound on I-35 about 14 miles east of Emporia and a 2000 Mercedes-Benz driven by Robert D. Crider, 56, of Lawrence, was northbound in the construction zone. Westland’s vehicle crossed the center line and struck Crider’s vehicle. Westland’s vehicle came to rest in the roadway of both north and south bound lanes. Crider’s vehicle came to rest near the shoulder of the northbound lane.

Westland and Crider were killed. They both were taken to Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Carol M. Westland, 71, of Carlisle, Iowa, was injured and taken to Coffey County Memorial Hospital.

We were traveling South on Sunday, and was in the delay. Our son left 2 hours ahead of us and we waited for him to back track and meet us in your town. Everyone that worked at the first gas station was very nice to all of us travelers who were delayed. We have drove by Lebo for many years and this was our first stop. It is a nice little town.
