EHS Class of 1956

The Emporia High School Class of 1956 reunion was held the weekend of Sept. 15-17. Those arriving the day before (Thursday) met for supper at the Olpe Chicken House. The group met Friday evening east of Emporia at Toad Hollow for a pig roast. Hosts were Gaylord West, class of 1956, and his wife, Nina West, who own and operate the Toad Hollow Daylily and Iris farm. Classmates, spouses, friends and relatives then met Saturday morning at the Emporia Country Club for registration and brunch. Some spent the day touring Emporia, while others played golf. The class picture was taken Saturday evening, after which the dinner of roast beef and chicken was served. The master of ceremonies for the program was Fred Saffer of Orlando, Fla.

The names and pictures of the deceased class members were on a bulletin board placed at the entrance. Those who have died are Barbara Barger Phillips, Duane Birk, Vickie Bixler Schutte, Thelma Brockelman Turner, Harold Cade, Robert Dabbs, Dorla Daily Sharp, Patricia Dawson Billings, Pat Dow Krohn, Ronda Duby Keating, Darrell Gilliland, Gerald “Jerry” Green, Phyllis Hammond, Karen Houser Lowry, Wayne Hufferd, LeRoy Jones, Gary McMillan, John Nielsen, Phyllis Retschlag Saffer, John Rogers, Cleo Strasser Jr., Robert Taylor, Darrell Walker, Robert Williams and Billie Jo Williams. Another classmate, Norma Sielert Roberts, died soon after the reunion. Music from the 1950s was played during dinner.
