Truman defeats Emporia State, 14-13

Saturday, October 14, 2006

— Truman marched down the field on the first drive of the game, keyed by a pass play on 2nd-and-9 from its own 47.

Matt Ticich fumbled the snap, but two Emporia State defenders were unable to corral him in the backfield. Instead, Ticich found a wide-open Jeff Sanders on the right sideline for a 23-yard-gain.

Jake Richter was also charged for a roughing-the-passer penalty, moving the ball to the 15.

Five plays later, Ticich scored on a quarterback sneak from two yards out. Mickey Masucci kicked the extra point to make it 7-0.

ESU responded on the next possesion, going 67 yards on eight plays to tie it. Seville Ko rushed six times for 35 yards on the drive, and Lucas Sullivan capped it with a 14-yard TD, leaping into the end zone for the score.

The ESU defense forced a three-and-out on the next Truman possession, and the Hornets drove 58 yards on 14 plays on the subsequent drive, setting up a 29-yard field goal by Jeff Edwards.

ESU forced a second straight three-and-out by Truman, and the Hornets drove 37 yards for another Edwards field goal. The senior's 45-yard boot made the score 13-7.

On its third possession of the second half, Truman drove 59 plays on 9 plays to tie it at 13. An unguarded Ryan Bonner caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Ticich for the score. Masucci's extra point gave Truman its second lead of the game.

ESU drove all the way to the Truman 15-yard-line on the final possession, but a Ben Purkeypile fumble was recovered by Truman's Courtney Jordan with just over a minute to play.

I have been reading your game articles this year and have found them to be really poorly written. You seem to just hurry through and get it done as quickly as possible- is that what we pay our subscription for? Even the games I have been to see don't seem that familiar when I read your version. You sure like to point out when a player makes a mistake- Richter gets a penalty, Purkeypile fumbles (even though it was an untimely snap). Why don't you tell about how many great plays Richter made during the game as well, tell who threw the touchdown pass (Purkeypile, in case you really weren't there), tell about the Truman fumble that was called off and hurt ESU's chances to win. I can't imagine such poor journalism coming from this newspaper.

I believe this is a brief just to inform the readers of the basics of the game outcome. I anticipate a full story later.
