A report of smoke on the sixth floor of Broadview Towers turned out to be a burned-out elevator motor Saturday night.
Several police and fire vehicles were called to the Sixth Avenue and Merchant Street building, which houses a number of elderly and disabled residents. Fire chief Jack Taylor said someone going up on the elevator had smelled smoke and called 911.
"When the call first came in, it said heavy smoke on the sixth floor," Taylor said. "That gets our pulse rate up in this kind of a building."
Firefighters found smoke but no fire, the result of a motor burning out in the seventh-floor control room.
"All we're doing now is clearing out smoke and making sure everyone can go back in," Taylor said a little after 8:30 p.m.
