Friday, October 13, 2006

A group of Emporia fifth- and sixth-grade students helped host the William Allen White Children’s Book Award celebration held here Saturday.

Thirty students were selected to be Emporia Ambassadors, a new program created this year to increase local interest and participation in the statewide White Award ceremony. The ambassadors helped the event planning committee during the morning activities at the Emporia State University campus and they led the parade from ESU to White Auditorium. More than 500 students from Kansas schools attended the celebration and awards ceremony Saturday.

Students were selected as ambassadors based on an application and short essay. Students chosen as ambassadors were:

Fifth graders: Nikki Aranda, Dani Aranda, Ashley Sherwood, Cheyenne Griffith, Jessica Parks, Megan Hilbish, Stewart Birk, Chantal Gomez, Mariah Rodriguez, Ariel Starr, Robby Crone, MaKenna Lane, Bailey Lane, Ashton Temple, Ali Longstreet, Abby Maycock and Drew Stapp.

Sixth graders: Kendra Milton, Saul Ortiz, Nancy Cervantes, Brianna Mendenhall, Jordan Kiser, Jose Ayala, TyRisha McCormick, Rocio Vega, Alex Jimenez, Nick Rodriguez, Jennifer Rosales, Monique Mason, Allie Mitchell

The Ambassador Program was coordinated by Cheryl Lane, Lowther librarian; Yvonne Brooks, QUEST coordinator; and Donna Young, library aide.
