The National Forensic League, the governing body for speech and debate competition throughout the United States, has honored the Emporia High School speech and debate program as one of the best programs in the nation.
J. Scott Wunn, national secretary for the organization, in his letter of commendation said, “This award is important because it means your program is teaching essential life skills — communication, research, listening, writing, organization — to a large number of students, not just the few stars.”
The EHS program is currently under the direction of new head coach Scott Bonnet. According to Bonnet, “This is a testament to the hard work of my predecessor, Carol Strickland. She devoted many years to laying a firm foundation for this program. I look forward to the opportunity to try and continue the tradition of excellence.”
The National Forensic League boasts over 2,700 member high schools from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Guam, Saipan, Turk Islands, and Puerto Rico. It is comprised of almost 100,000 student competitors.
