Friday, October 13, 2006

The Emporia State soccer team ended a four-game losing streak, tying Missouri Western, 1-1, Wednesday night in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Griffons struck first, scoring in the 19th minute on Ashley Harrel’s first goal of the season.

ESU answered nine minutes later. Sarah Tetuan put in her second goal of the season, finishing a 30-yard pass from Raquel White to even the score at 1.

The two teams went scoreless the rest of the way, which included two 10-minute overtimes. The Hornets outshot the Griffons 13-4 after the first half.

Megan Martin went the entire 110 minutes in goal for ESU, recording three saves.

Western’s Shaylynn Milbourn added 11 stops of her own, with three of those coming in the second overtime.

The Hornets picked up the physical play in the second half, as they were whistled for 10 fouls in the 45-minute stretch. The two teams combined for five yellow cards, all coming after the 65th minute.

ESU (3-10-1) travels to Northwest Missouri State on Sunday.
