What are the three greatest challenges facing Lyon County?
“The first thing would be they need to continue to work on the cooperation between the county and the other government operations. Another big challenge is going to be able to keep the road and the bridges maintained at the quality they have been. We’ve got great roads. I think with the high fuel and asphalt costs, that’s going to be a challenge.
“The third thing is to try to bring more industrial growth into the county.”
The Chamber of Commerce has made a recent push for five commissioners and a county administrator. What are your feelings on these issues?
“It doesn’t make any difference. The voters will decide on that one. Personally, I’m not convinced it’s the right thing.”
Budgeting is a challenge in government each year. What needs to be done to meet the needs of the county without unduly burdening the taxpayers?
“I think that goes back to the industrial growth. If we can attract businesses in the county, of course we have more revenue, more jobs at that time. I am concerned with the state and federal mandates that are unfunded. I do understand that they are increasing. It will be a challenge to keep the costs around the county under control without raising taxes.”
What other ways can Lyon County work with the city of Emporia or other entities around us?
“I think there’s been some sharing in responsibility of the county. Again I haven’t been on the commission. I do understand that there’s the ambulance services, the health department, the L-Cat. They seem to be big issues. I think maybe if they would distinguish who is actually responsible for what, if everybody knew what the plan was, we could work on solving it then.”
Why should voters vote for you?
“I think we need to be represented by someone who will take the time to listen to people. They want to be listened to. I’ve been to — actually since I’ve started this, I’ve been to more functions in all my life. If the people understand why you are doing what you are doing they know you are doing the best you can.”
