Ken Bazil

Age: 62

Party: Republican

Occupation: Retired

Political experience: Long time ago served on the school board, sat on Rural Water District No. 5, county zoning board for six years

What are the three greatest challenges facing Lyon County?

“Being able to keep the taxes to where they’re not outrageous. To find some other funding to keep the services that we now provide viable. The third is to do a better job of taking care of our employees.”

The Chamber of Commerce has made a recent push for five commissioners and a county administrator. What are your feelings on these issues?

“I am for it, but (it’s OK) if the voters don’t carry it. I can see the need for it.”

Budgeting is a challenge in government each year. What needs to be done to meet the needs of the county without unduly burdening the taxpayers?

“I know one thing, we’ve got a great asset down there. We’ve got people who’ve worked for the county for 20 years and it’s called strategic planning. I think we can go through those people and go through strategic planning and work through costs and be able to provide better services for less money. I am a big proponent for strategic planning. I’ve worked in it and I am for it.”

What other ways can Lyon County work with the city of Emporia or other entities around us?

“I think there’s a lot of ways that we can work together. There’s a lot of things I’m going to have to go look at. I honestly think that there are things that we can do together to help.

“I think there’s things that we both do that only needs to be done by one. I don’t know exactly how we are going to do that, but I’m sure that we can find some ways to help one another. We’re both doing the same thing. We’re both providing government services.”

Why should voters vote for you?

“I think that because of my experience. I’ve been in management for 24 years; I’ve had training in budgets. I’ve had training in how to get along with people, how to work with people and my problem-solving abilities with my last job. I think that’s one of the best reasons I can help the situation. I know how to promote pride and when you have pride, you have employees to help find ways to do things better.”

While on the zoning commission Mr Bazil was pro development and anti ag preservation. Why would folks in Lyon County want to vote in a third anti ag preservation Commissioner? If Mr Bazil is elected, the farmers and ranchers of Lyon County will have no voice on the commission.
