The Emporia High girls golf team will not be represented at the state tournament next week after the Spartans had a rough outing Monday at the Regional tournament at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
The Spartans finished eighth out of eight teams, leaving Emporia High 22 shots behind seventh-place Wichita East and a whopping 182 shots behind Regional-winner Manhattan, who finished with a team score of 327.
Sophomore Maryann Bennett was the high finisher for EHS on a chilly and windy day at the golf course. Bennett finished in 21st place with a score of 113, leaving her just four strokes out of the top 20.
Rachael Clopton also turned in a top-30 outing, finishing in a tie for 28th with a score of 123.
Alyssa Coffelt finished in a tie for 31st (127), Amber Richard came in 42nd (146), Hannah Watkins placed 44th (155) and Aubrey Koeppe rounded out the Spartan scoring with a tie for 45th (163).
In taking the team title, Manhattan finished with the top four individual placers, led by the duo of sisters Emily Houtz and Elise Houtz. Emily finished with a 77 to take the individual title, while Elise was one stroke back with a 78 to finish second.
