No. 2 Northwest Missouri State defeats Emporia State, 49-17

Saturday, October 7, 2006

Maryville, Mo. -- A Ben Purkeypile fumble led to an early Northwest score.

Purkeypile fumbled at his own 30, giving the ball back to Northwest at the ESU 25.

Xavier Omon scored four plays later, hurdling into the end zone from two yards out.

ESU's offense went backwards on its second drive, and Northwest capitalized on a short field, taking over on the ESU 26 after a Johnny Torres punt from the 1.

The Bearcats went 26 yards on 5 plays, as Omon broke Northwest's all-time scoring record with a one-yard plunge.

The Hornets went backwards for a second straight possession on their third drive, punting the ball away after a three-and-out.

The Bearcats went 60 yards on six plays for their third touchdown, as an uncovered Kendall Wright caught an eight-yard touchdown pass from Josh Mathews.

ESU drove 64 yards on its next possession, getting on the scoreboard with a Jeff Edwards 28-yard field goal.

Northwest marched down the field on the opening possession of the second half, driving 61 yards on eight plays. Omon scored his third touchdown with a one-yard run.

The Hornets cut the lead to 28-10 with a 9-play, 51-yard TD drive. Justin Wieser capped it with a seven-yard run, ESU's first rushing touchdown against Northwest since Brian Shay had one in 1998.

The Bearcats responded with an 8-play drive, scoring on a 3rd-and-10 with a 17-yard run by Omon.

On the next possession, Purkeypile completed a 20-yard TD pass to Ryan Hulings on a 4th-and-10. Edwards' extra point trimmed the lead to 18.

Northwest scored again on the next drive, going 60 yards on 11 plays. LaRon Council gave the Bearcats their fifth rushing touchdown, scoring on a four-yard run.

Abe Qaoud caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Joel Osborn to add to the lead.

In your article you may want to point out that the 51yd TD drive was began by Seville Ko. Once he helped get the ball down the field the coach takes him out and Weiser happens to catch a break and get one of the best blocks of the game for the TD. That touchdown should have been Seville's. Not to mention the fact that Seville averaged 4.62 yards per carry to Justin Weiser's .9! Seville averaged more yards per carry against NWMO than even Jermaine White from Missouri Western who average 3.38. Someone needs to question the coaches as to why they keep treating their best running back like this. Even with litte opportunity Seville still manages to out play Justin Weiser. What's going on in Emporia? Many people are wondering? Got to be the coaching!!!
