Mayiah, 2, recently got pampered, primped and ready to strut the cat walk at Emporia’ newest salon.
The teacup poodle got her beauty treatment at Top Dog Salon, 1425 E. Sixth Ave., across from Casey’s east. Mayiah left with a brand-new haircut, bows and perfumed grooming spray.
The new salon is owned by Rachel Farr, who has worked with animals for more than 10 years. She and her mother, Cheryl Farr, run the grooming salon, pampering pets from head to tail. They also harbor lost and abandoned animals, giving them food and shelter. The family are lifetime members of the H. Dale Buck Fund and have numerous pets of their own.
“At our house, our pets are family, from our dogs to our horses,” according to Top Dog Salon’s brochure.
Farr said she decided to open the grooming salon because she saw it as another way to help the animals. Animals that come into the salon are treated like family, Rachel Farr said.
“I just like the interaction with the animals,” she said. “We’ve always been really big on rescuing animals. I wanted to do something (more) to help animals. We are very animal-oriented.”
The Farrs renovated the building, which used to be a coin laundry. They had to gut the building, taking out the washers and dryers. The end product — a functional, colorful and pet-friendly grooming salon complete with a grooming table and bath tubs for the dogs.
“We came in and totally re-vamped,” Cheryl Farr said. “It’s all new and improved in here. It’s kept pretty clean — as clean as you can keep it with dogs.”
Services offered at the salon include: baths; cleaning and plucking ears if needed; shaving sani area; shaving pads of feet; clipping or filing nails; and dematting. Prices range from $28 for small dogs up to $58 for larger dogs. Dematting also is done at a rate of $5 for 15-minute increments. The salon also offers medicated shampoo, flea shampoo, flea dips and whitening shampoos.
On a customer’s 10th visit, there is a 50 percent discount. The Farrs call this service “The Top Dog Top of the Line Club.”
Cheryl Farr said they plan on doing more renovations to the building, including putting up a gate so dogs can exercise during their stay. For now, however, the area remains open and dogs stay safe in bright pink kennels.
“The dogs are never left unattended,” Cheryl Farr said. “We tried to set it up to make it as pleasant as possible.”
Top Dog Salon also carries liability insurance on the pets.
