Friday, October 6, 2006

Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. Give these folks a pat on the back ...

LOGAN CROW and Edde Dill, whose artwork and essay appeared in the nationally distributed education journal, “Intervention in School and Clinic.”

F Flint Hills Special Education Cooperative, which hosted a state conference in Emporia. More than 200 educators and parents attended the conference on using technology to help children learn.

F Emporia High students Chase Ihde and Mary Yanik, who have been named to the 2007 National Merit Scholarship program.

F The North Lyon County Recreation Wrestling Club, which had Michael Martin Murphey perform for a fundraiser. The event raised almost $3,000 for the organization.

F Organizers and participants of the mass vaccination clinic. Flint Hills Community Health Center provided flu shots for $10 and gave Emporia medical personnel the chance to practice mass vaccinations. More than 500 people took part in the event.

F Judy Calhoun, who was an ambassador for a national cancer rally in Washington. Calhoun is the chair of the Newman Division of Nursing at Emporia State University and has been involved with the American Cancer Society for 30 years.

F Mar Jean Anderson, who has retired from delivering mail after 31 years of service.
