Hornet soccer falls twice

Monday, October 2, 2006

The Emporia State soccer team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend, falling 3-1 to Southwest Baptist on Saturday and 3-2 to Missouri Southern on Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, Amy Swallow gave SBU the lead, heading a corner kick past ESU keeper Erin Allen to make it 1-0.

The Hornets’ Katherine DeWeese responded five minutes later, scoring an unassisted goal to knot it at 1.

The two teams remained tied until the 76th minute, when Jamie Sabel’s goal made it 2-1 Bearcats. Adrienne Johnson added an insurance goal in the 87th minute.

Allen contributed six saves in the loss. SBU outshot ESU 19-5 in the contest.

On Sunday, Jessica Harthcock’s goal in the 82nd minute proved to be the game-winner as the Hornets fell by one.

ESU scored first, as Alicia Smith put in an unassisted goal in the 17th minute.

Nikki Llewellyn and Erin Gfeller both added goals before the half ended to make it 2-1 Southern.

Andrea Harris evened it up in the 77th minute, scoring on a feed from Smith. The tie would only last five minutes.

The Hornets again were drastically outshot by their opponent, as Southern attempted 26 shots compared to ESU’s five.

Megan Martin posted 13 saves for the Hornets.

ESU (3-9, 1-6 MIAA) will play host to Washburn on Friday at the TRYSA Soccer Complex.
