The picture of charity

Yesteryear Ol’ Tyme Photos will take portraits as a fundraiser for the Nathaniel Pearson Medical Fund on Saturday and Sunday at the Flinthills Mall. All props and clothing will be provided for your portraits; participants are welcome to bring special props and children dressed in their “special outfits.” Call Stacey Burton at 342- 4631 for an appointment.

Bazaar and brunch

The 56th annual Holiday Bazaar and Brunch of the First Congregational Church will be held from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the church basement. The main entrance is on the west side; the church is handicap accessible at the southwest side and there also is an elevator. There will be baked goods, candies, canned goods, crafts, books, jewelry, gifts and more. The brunch, served from 7:30 a.m. to noon, will feature juices, breakfast casseroles, apple fritters, muffins, quick breads, coffeecakes, coffee and milk. Tickets for the brunch, $4 for adults and $2 for children 10 and younger, may be purchased in advance or at the door.

Pancakes for supper ...

The Reading Lions Club is having a pancake supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the basement of the Reading Methodist Church. The menu includes biscuits, gravy, sausage, eggs, pancakes, juice and coffee. There will be a drawing for $100 and $50. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. People need not be present to win. The proceeds from this meal will be used to provide Christmas treats for children of the community. Donations will be accepted.

... Or maybe soup

The Cottonwood Falls United Methodist Church will have a Homemade Soup Supper Saturday at the Masonic Temple, 234 Broadway in Cottonwood Falls. Serving begins at 6 p.m., with the menu featuring chicken noodle soup, chili, vegetable beef soup, relish tray, desserts and beverages. Meals are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. After supper, there will be an auction of homemade items, including crafts, holiday decorations, woodworking, baked goods and more.

Paws to Give

The H. Dale Buck Animal Welfare Memorial Fund is holding its first Paws to Give fund and supply drive through the month of December to help care for the many homeless animals that enter the shelter. Those who provide a photograph of their “special furry friend” with their monetary or supply donation will have their photo framed and featured on the Buck Fund Christmas Tree at the Flinthills Mall through December. Advance pancake tickets

The Emporia Christian School will have its 13th annual Pancake Feed from 7 a.m. to noon Dec. 9 at the Anderson Building on the Lyon County fairgrounds. Tickets are available from ECS students or at the ECS office, 1325 C of E Drive. Advance tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 3-12 years of age. Tickets at the door are $5.50 and $3.50. Proceeds will be used for new playground equipment.

Money for medical expenses

Western Music Association singer-songwriter Barry Ward of Flying W Productions of Elbert, Colo., will be the featured entertainer at a fundraising event Dec. 9 at the Council Grove High School. Funds will help with medical expenses for Alta Vista resident Terry Dishon, who has cancer, and his wife, Rita Dishon. Hosts for the event will be the northeast Kansas Bibles and Boots Chapter of Cowboys for Christ.

The evening will begin with a sloppy joe supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Donations will be accepted at the meal, with proceeds going to the Bible and Boots chapter. The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Tickets, purchased at the door, are $10 for adults; $5 for children and $15 for two adults.

Also performing will be gospel singer Ron Smith of Westmoreland and cowboy poet Dwight Burgess of Wamego. Rex Buchman of Burdick will be the master of ceremonies.
