Wednesday, November 29, 2006

Olpe dominated the 11-Man All-Lyon County League football selections this year thanks to its trip to the State playoff semifinals and its 12-1 record. The Eagles garnered 12 of the 27 spots possible on the 11-Man All-LCL squad and also picked up four honorable mention spots.

Olpe players garnering spots on the all-league squad included: offensive lineman and linebacker August Stueve, offensive and defensive lineman Jacob Miller, tight end and defensive end Seth Pargman, quarterback Tanner Coble, wide receiver Jordan Pargman, linebacker Drew Pettijohn, defensive back Michael Schmidt and kicker and punter Dallas Burenheide.

Honorable mention selections for Olpe were Pettijohn and Stueve at running back, Coble at defensive end and Jordan Pargman at defensive back.

Upstart Lyndon entered the State playoffs at 5-4 and knocked out Immaculta and Centralia before falling to Olpe. For the efforts of the Tiger football team, four Lyndon players were named to the all-league team — Justin Bartkowski on the offensive and defensive line, Alex Wendling on the offensive line and at linebacker, Kade Neilson at running back and Quinn Kirsop at defensive end.

Neilson and Kirsop picked up honorable mention honors at linebacker and tight end, respectively, as did linebacker Adam Kitzman.

Rounding out the area players named to the 11-Man squad were Chase County’s Adam Spain, offensive and defensive line; and Brian Palermo, running back and defensive back. West Elk garnered the remaining selections on the 11-Man team.

On the 8-Man side of the All-Lyon County League team, State champion Waverly and State semifinal-qualifier Madison ran away with the most selections, combining to take 12 of the 23 spots on the team, plus another six honorable mention spots.

The Gazette’s All-Area Player of the Year, Waverly’s Matt Coursen, was a unanimous selection at running back and also earned a spot as a defensive back. Coursen finished his season with 1,523 rushing yards and 27 rushing touchdowns, plus 553 receiving yards and another 12 touchdowns.

Waverly’s Dentin Chapman also was a unanimous selection at kicker. Other unanimous selections on offense were Marais des Cygnes Valley offensive lineman David Becker and Madison offensive lineman Ryan Williams. Defensively, Madison defensive end Donovan Hamilton, Lebo linebacker Chris Bray and Hartford punter Andrew Wiederholt earned unanimous selections.
