The holidays are upon us. That means carriage rides downtown and plenty of events to keep everybody hopping.
Emporia Main Street is busy preparing for the annual Holiday Stroll — a title that encompasses all the events the downtown revitalization group has planned for the holidays, said Mary Helmer, of Emporia Main Street.
The Holiday Stroll kicks off Thursday with carriage rides downtown. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Farmer’s Market kiosk in the 700 block of Merchant Street. The rides will continue from 5 to 8 p.m. every Thursday evening in December — weather permitting.
“If it’s too cold for the horses, it’s too cold for people,” Helmer said.
On Saturday, it’s Breakfast with Santa. Emporia Main Street is co-sponsoring the event with The Emporia Arts Council and the Emporia Public Library. Breakfast with Santa will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the library. There will be breakfast, a craft area where chidren can make ornaments, and caroling. There also will be two different story times where Santa will read to attendees.
Helmer said people attending should take their cameras if they want to have their pictures with Santa on Saturday.
Kris Kringle’s Kids’ Shop will be open from 3 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 15 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 16 at 620 Commercial St.
“This is a special area for kids to shop and the gifts are $10 and under,” Helmer said. “It’s nice. It’s a place for parents to drop their kids off and we help them with the shopping.
“It’s always nice to have the kids shop for mom and dad without mom and dad around.”
Helmer said lights have been placed in nearly all the trees downtown. She, Lane Hollern and Rod Crawford volunteered to put the lights up in the trees this year.

Whoa! I'm stuck in a time warp! But not all is lost. I can make a fortune betting on sporting events.
