Gun Range Is Back on Agenda

Tuesday, November 28, 2006

Three zoning items, including a shooting range, are up for discussion during Wednesday’s Lyon County commission meeting.

The items will be heard at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Lyon County commission chambers of the Lyon County Courthouse. The first item is the shooting range. Roger Proehl is asking for rezoning of land at 1511 Road 170. Proehl, a member of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department, plans to use the range for his business, which is training people on the new concealed-carry law.

More than 30 people showed up for November’s Lyon County Planning and Appeals board meeting to speak regarding the application. During that meeting, Proehl also said he might consider allowing controlled shooting for beginner shooters and advanced shooting. Proehl said the range would not be used as a public shooting range and shooters would not be unsupervised.

Supporters at November’s meeting said they were looking for a legal place to shoot. Those speaking against cited safety and noise concerns. Lyon County commissioners will hear the application on Wednesday and vote on it during Thursday’s action session.

Commissioners also will hear an application from APAC-Kansas Shears Division to re-zone 1910 Road 175 to heavy industrial use. Lyon County zoning administrator and flood plain manager Steve Samuelson said the company has been at the site for 30 years and has always applied for temporary rezoning. The company has decided to apply for permanent zoning of the property.

Commissioners also will hear an application for rezoning of property at 3457 Road U in Reading for a radio transmitting tower. The application is being made by Howard Gunkel and US Cellular.

Other items on Wednesday’s agenda:

• Sheriff Gary Eichorn will discuss a transfer of $4,500 from special law enforcement fund to court services to support drug court services.

• County Attorney Marc Goodman will discuss using up to $2,500 from diversion funds to buy the following items for use by the Kansas Highway Patrol: flatscreen TV/DVD/VCR combo; 4-head VCR; two Sony Cybershot digital cameras with memory cards and cases; fiber optic scope.
