Walgreens will open in summer

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

Emporia’s new Walgreens store will open this summer.

Walgreens spokeswoman Carol Hively announced the opening plans Monday. The new 14,800 square-foot store will be located at the corner of 15th Avenue and Industrial Road in the southwest corner of the Flinthills Mall parking lot.

A pair of deeds on the land were recently transferred to Mission River LLC of Topeka, according to the office of the Lyon County Register of Deeds. A 2004 report said that Mission River had developed more than 40 sites for Walgreens. Most recently, the company put Walgreens stores in Liberal and Pittsburg.

Preliminary plans were filed on the building last month, calling it Walgreens No. 1167. According to the company, there are 52 Walgreens in Kansas and 5,515 nationwide.

Hively said the store would include a drive-through pharmacy window and photo-finishing services, including passport photos, digital photos and one-hour processing. Customers will be able to download photos from their home computer to walgreens.com, Hively said, and then pick them up at the store in as little as an hour.

Walgreen Co. reached $47.4 billion in sales in fiscal year 2006, making it the nation’s largest drugstore chain and eighth largest retailer. It operates stores in 47 states and Puerto Rico.

Code services chief Martin Peres said the city has not yet issued a building permit on the property, but that he expected to do so by the end of this week or early next week. The city is still waiting on one of the company’s subcontractors, he said.

“We should be getting it issued any day,” Peres said.

He added with a chuckle, “I’m kind of anxious to get that thing off my desk.”

There sure seems to be a space-crunch between the back corner of the Walgreens and the front corner of the old Food for Less. How are people going to safely drive through there?
