Morris County

Mary Collins, a second-grade teacher at Council Grove Elementary School, was one of eight finalists for 2007 Kansas Teacher of the Year.

The award was presented Nov. 11 to Joshua Anderson of Olathe, during a ceremony held in Wichita.

Anderson and the seven other finalists will work as a team throughout the coming year to advocate for education and teaching, according a news release from the Kansas State Department of Education.

The annual meeting of voters of Mill Creek Watershed district will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Farm Service Agency Office in Alma. The district includes Geary, Morris, Riley and Wabaunsee counties.

Directors will be elected for Center Main Branch and at-large. Donald Dieball is president of the board and Keith Schultz is secretary.

Coffey County

Craft vendors are needed for Burlingame’s 17th Annual Country Christmas on Dec. 2. The show will be from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with two locations in downtown Burlingame. More information may be had by calling Carolyn Strohm at 785-654-3561 or e-mailing crs41@earthlink.net.

Lyon County

Four positions will be open on the North Lyon County Board of Education during the spring election in 2007. The filing deadline is noon on Jan. 23rd at the Lyon County Clerk’s office. Board members elected will take office on July 1.

The openings, and current members filling those positions, are: Position 1, Reading, Ronda Hooper; Position 2, Americus, Sarah Meenen; Position 3, North (Admire, Allen, Bushong, Miller), Karen Boyce; and Position 7, at-large, Robert Karr.

Americus Elementary School students recently received awards at the First Character Academic Assembly at the school.

Students who received awards for character traits and choices were: Trevor Martin and Allyssa Beck, kindergarten; Richard Parnell, Elizabeth Murray, Avery Lupkes, and Kortney Wilmore, first grade; Kent Cottenmyre, Jalaine King and Jasmine Bautista, second grade; Cheyenna Crane, Aden English and Alex Irvin, third grade; Megan Irvin and Colton Miller, fourth grade; and David Goldsmith, fifth grade.

Those who received academic awards were: Allile Houston and Jacob Lewis, kindergarten; Eli Ferris, Andrea Anderson and Alec Tucker, first grade; Emily Elbert, Keely Lane, Hudson Doudna and Delaney Dold, second grade; Austin Anderson, Abby Doudna, Peyton Heins, Riley Houston, Natalie Leffler, Taryn Meyers and Tyler Ross, third grade; Anna Grother and Sarah Moyer, fourth grade; and Cody Campbell, fifth grade.

A district-wide science fair is planned on Dec. 13 at Admire Elementary School. Exhibits in the gymnasium will be open to the public for viewing from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and a supper will be served. The meal will consist of brats, hot dogs, chili and desserts.

A special show from Dr. Malonne Davies and Linda and Art Landis, “Two Crazy Ladies of Science and their Cohort,” will be presented during the evening.
