SOS gets grant to repair, maintain shelter building

Friday, November 17, 2006

SOS has received a $20,000 grant in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The grant comes from the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation to support SOS in its efforts to help domestic violence victims and their children. SOS was one of 150 nonprofit organizations throughout the country that received a grant from the foundation for its shelter during the month of October.

The grant money is designed to go toward shelter maintenance and repair. Damage to the building’s foundation caused shifting doors and windows to stick creating a safety hazard and cracks in the foundation have caused the basement to flood multiple times, said Lanesa Poulton, of SOS community relations.

“SOS is excited to accept this award,” said Diane Unruh, shelter manager. “It is important to us to have a comfortable, inviting building to allow survivors to create safety plans and start the healing process with dignity in a safe, secure and homelike atmosphere.”

The Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation was created in 1996 to fund research of cancers affecting women and in 2000 expanded its mission to include the prevention of violence against women.
