AREA ACTIVE and retired military personnel, who have served our country and were honored by our community’s All Veterans Tribute.
- Lyon county commissioners, who unanimously approved the rezoning of land for a new power plant that Westar Energy will build in Lyon County.
- Steve Turner, who was named Assistant Principal of the Year by the Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals.
- Emporia High School soccer player Alex Guevara, who was named to the All-Centennial League first team. Guevara has also been named to the Class 5A All-State boys soccer team.
- The Emporia Convention & Visitors Bureau, which was recognized at the Kansas Travel and Tourism Conference for its excellence in marketing. They received the award for their new “Front Porch to the Flint Hills” billboards.
- The Wolf Creek Generating Station, which completed it shortest refueling outage in 21 years. The outage took 34 days and seven hours.
- Area donors who have given $460,000 to the United Way fundraising drive. There is still $140,000 left to raise. The money raised goes to local social-service agencies.
- Kenny Walburn, who qualified to compete in the U.S. National Championship for bodybuilding and fitness.
