Painting on auction for depot restoration

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Bidding will end at noon Nov. 24, for an auction of an oil painting by artist Joseph Loganbill of Newton. Loganbill donated the 8 inch by 10 inch painting for the silent auction to raise money for the Strong City Depot Restoration Project.

The painting was done during the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society Plein Air Paint-Off in Chase County last month, according to a news release from Deb Zeiner of the Chase County Chamber of Commerce. “Plein Air” is a French term that means creating art in the open air.

Loganbill was the 2004 winner of the William Dickerson Award of Merit from the Wichita Center for the Arts.

The painting has been on display throughout Chase County and bidding has been under way since Nov. 1.

Bids can be made by e-mail at strongcity@sbcglobal.net. Bids may be made at the Chase County Chamber of Commerce, 318 Broadway in Cottonwood Falls or at the Strong City city hall during regular business hours. The painting and more information may be viewed at the Web site at www.skyways.org/towns/StrongCity/.

The winning bidder will be announced at 6:45 p.m. Nov. 25, during the Chase County Country Christmas celebration in Cottonwood Falls. The painting will be presented in a gold frame.

The Strong City Depot was built by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad in 1913. Its tile roof is considered unstable and the building is deteriorating.

“The goal of the depot project committee is to save the structure and create a centerpiece for the Strong City community,” Zeiner said.
