Deadly encounter

Wednesday, November 15, 2006

FIRST OF ALL, I would like to take the time to thank Sara Shaw and all the wonderful people from Camp Alexander.

On Halloween night as they were getting ready to open the trail for one last night some IDIOT came barreling around the curve on Road 170 east of town right in front of the Camp Alexander walking trails where they hold the Haunted Trail each year, and ran smack dab into our 7-month-old golden retriever, who is a frequent visitor of all the volunteers who work the trail. These very kind people have been very patient as all our dogs took the 1/4 mile hike down the road to visit them each and every night they worked the trail. They had formed relationships with the dogs.

So as you can imagine watching one of them get plowed down by a truck was like seeing their own animal being hit.

Mind you, this inconsiderate person didn’t even bother slowing down on a 35 mph curve. This person took it at an estimated 60 to 70 mph. Then didn’t even have the courtesy to stop to see what or who they hit. There have been many children visit the trail and this person had no idea if they had hit a child, person or animal.

Sara scooped up a motionless puppy and rushed him to the vet. He was treated for shock and given pain medication. Sara then made every attempt to get hold of us, calling our home and anyone she knew who was associated with our family. We later got the message that he had been hit and were told he might not make it. He survived the night, but was later put to sleep because of major fractures in his hip, knee and spine and suffered paralysis because of a spinal cord injury.

So thank you, Sara, and thanks a bunch to the person who hit our dog and ruined many children’s Halloween.
