KU honors

Students from area high schools were honored Thursday by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment.

They are among 71 seniors from high schools in Chase, Coffey, Lyon and Morris counties who will be recognized for their academic achievements and named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 6:30 p.m. dinner program at Emporia State University’s Webb Lecture Hall.

Those honored include:

Jessica Doidge, Bradley Dunlop, Katie Guevel, Lance Jones, Tyrel Reed, Brent Stull and Matthew Vander Linden, all of Burlington High School; Ann Heinen, Trevor Johnson and Bradley Talkington all of Chase County High School; Caitlin Adams, Becky Anderson, Mary Byram, Ashley Prudence, Adam Ragoschke, Brett Siegle, Samantha Smith, Abby Switzer and Samantha Wright, all of Council Grove High School.

Pitt honors

Pittsburg State University has released the honor rolls for the 2006 summer sessions. Receiving All-A Academic Honors from this area was Matthew Sigle of Council Grove who is studying Automobile technology. He is the son of Jo Bea Titus of Council Grove.

High Q

Teams representing Burlington, Hartford, Lebo and Waverly high schools will participate in the 2006-07 Quest academic competition on Dec. 2 at Washburn University. The contest, co-sponsored by KTWU-PBS station and Washburn University, allows teams of high school students from across Kansas to compete against one another in answering questions on topics such as art, literature, history, math and science.

Teams earning the top 16 scores will advance to the finals and return to Topeka several times for taping sessions. The televised Quest competition will air on KTWU from February to May 2007.

Representing Burlington High will be Hilary Dees, daughter of David and Darla Dees; Jessica Doidge, daughter of John and Teresa Doidge; Katie Guevel, daughter of Pat and Jan Guevel; Chris Hall, son of Ken and Helene Hall; Mitch Jones, son of Brad and Darla Jones; and Brent Stull, son of Bruce and Annette Stull. All students are seniors. The coach is Sally J. Donahue.

Representing Hartford High will be Layne Higgins, sophomore, son of Karen Chaffain; Clay Houser, senior, son of Donald and Angela Houser; Dustin Lingenfelter, freshman, son of Kerri Owen; John Roberts, sophomore, and Leah Roberts, freshman, son and daughter of Don and Arlene Roberts; Kelcie Williams, senior, daughter of Steve and Theresa Williams. The coach is Shannon Aguirre.

Representing Lebo High will be Jason Freund, senior, son of Ron and Marjorie Freund; Aaron Gillespie, senior, son of Don and Vickie Gillespie; Chelesea Schroeder, junior, daughter of David and Brenda Schroeder; Chris Teeter, senior, son of Jim and Kathy Teeter; Joshua Weltha, senior, son of Michael Weltha and Carol Chambers; Larissa Wimbs, senior, daughter of Kathleen Vickery and Neville Wimbs. The coach is Sue Sielert.

Representing Waverly High will be seniors Miranda Burns, junior, daughter of Kim and Robert Woods; Jeff Clarkson, freshman, son of LeeAnn Pock and Jerry Clarkson; Angela Gifford, sophomore, daughter of Sandy and Dale Gifford; Kim Kratzberg, senior, daughter of Sandy and Ron Nedwed and Dale Kratzberg; Donovan Onnen, junior, son of Sherrie and Dannon Onnen; Heather Schultz, sophomore, daughter of Laura and Allen Schultz.
