Wal-Mart competes against itself

Monday, November 13, 2006

Q I receive Wal-Mart circulars from Emporia and Topeka. The circulars look the same and have the same products. Why are some products advertised at lower prices in Topeka’s circular than in Emporia’s?

For instance, a Tickle Me Elmo Chair was advertised for $28.97 in Topeka and $34.97 in Emporia. A Baby Alive Animated Doll was $39.97 in Topeka and $46.88 in Emporia.

A Competition seems to be the key to pricing, according to information from Wal-Mart’s media relations division.

“Wal-Mart’s policy is to match advertised prices of local competitors,” said Marisa Bluestone, Wal-Mart spokesperson. “Because of this, there might be some fluctuation in prices from town to town or even in the community. The difference then would be because of the competition. (Wal-Mart) is always going to meet the competitors’ prices.”

And when the local Wal-Mart’s competition is a Wal-Mart store out of town?

“We want to ensure that each customer is satisfied,” Bluestone said. “If customers have specific concerns, they should feel free to ask a manager.”

If Wal-Mart really cared about "us" the consumers, they would do everything in their power to make it fair. Just because cities are bigger and have more stores doesn't mean they should mess with the prices. It seems like wal-mart forgot where they came from. Consumers are not stupid as wal-mart or others may think they are.
