Wolf Creek completes outage

Saturday, November 11, 2006

Wolf Creek Generating Station completed its shortest outage in its 21-year history on Friday.

The nuclear power plant, located north of Burlington, began producing power Friday morning, ending a refueling and maintenance outage that began Oct. 7th., according to a news release from Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation, which operates the plant.

“I am pleased with the fact that this was our shortest outage ever,” said Steve Hedges, plant manager and vice president of operations. “But more importantly, we safely completed the work needed to support another continuous run. As part of our culture at the plant, we continue to identify ways to further improve performance.”

When the plant shut down last month for refueling, it ended the plant’s longest continuous run without incident. The plant had operated safely for 506 consecutive days. Wolf Creek employees have worked almost 5.8 million hours without a lost-time accident, the release said.

Those employees, and more than 700 contract workers, completed the outage in 34 days and seven hours.

“Records are great, but our number one focus has always been on the safety of our workers, our plant and the public,” Hedges said.
