Southern responded with a five-play, 46-yard TD drive. Freddie Colbert finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.
A 94-yard reverse on a kickoff return by Jake Richter set up a 19-yard Jeff Edwards field goal that made it 10-7 ESU.
Southern came back with a four-play, 61-yard drive that took just 55 seconds. Ronnell Newman capped it with a 5-yard TD run.
The Hornets' next possession went 82 yards on 12 plays, with Purkeypile throwing his second TD pass, this time to Ryan Hulings for a 3-yard score.
The Lions completed a 10-play, 66-yard TD drive with a Colin Bado 14-yard misdirection run for the score.
On the ensuing kickoff, Ryan Hulings fumbled the ball, and Kellen Anderson recovered, returning it 12 yards for the touchdown. Malette's extra-point made it 28-17.
Jeff Edwards kicked a 24-yard field goal on the next drive to make it 28-20.
Seville Ko rushed for a 35-yard touchdown to bring ESU within two. The two-point conversion pass from Purkeypile fell incomplete.

Southern responded with an 8-play, 85-yard drive, with Colbert scoring on a 7-yard run. Hinspeter's two-point conversion pass was incomplete, keeping the score at 34-33.
ESU never could get the score to go back ahead. A 36-yard field goal attempt from Edwards was blocked, and the Hornets' next two possessions ended without the Hornets making into Southern territory.
