The Lyon County Planning and Appeals Board will again hear an application from Roger Proehl for a shooting range at 1511 Road 170.
Proehl, a member of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department, plans to use the range for his business, which is training people on the new concealed-carry law. This is Proehl’s second go-around with the planning board. The application was tabled last month pending more information.
Proehl said the range time on the classes is about 1 1/2 hours with the entire shooting process taking 15 to 20 minutes. He can take four people out on the range at a time. The range will be for handguns only. Proehl said he would take precautions to prevent safety hazards and also will build berms to absorb some of the sound.
“A typical misconception is that a firing range is loud and obnoxious,” Proehl said. “The way (the range) will be constructed it’s somewhat enclosed and insulated. Basically, on a properly constructed range, you will have deflected sounds but not direct sound.”
The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Lyon County commission chambers of the Lyon County Courthouse.
Also on Wednesday’s agenda:
• Board members will hear an application from APAC-Kansas Shears Division to re-zone 1910 Road 175 to heavy industrial use. Lyon County zoning administrator and flood plain manager Steve Samuelson said the company has been at the site for 30 years and has always applied for temporary re-zoning. They decided to apply for permanent zoning of the property.
• Board members will hear an application for rezoning of property at 3457 Road U in Reading for a radio transmitting tower. The application is being made by Howard Gunkel and US Cellular.

Hate to ruin Mr. Proehl's daydream, but it's not a misconception, shooting ranges are loud and obnoxious. The Michigan DNR put one in next to us and it's been living hell. The deflected sound still has to go somewhere. It will only be fully abated if it is an indoor range. The only other effective means of noise abatement is distance. Shooting tubes and barriers may quiet it somewhat, but a big calibre handgun can carry for quite a distance. Check out the website www.cfqc.org for details and non-misconceptions.
