Americus News

Senior citizens center

Flu shots will be available from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 21 at the center. Shots not covered by Medicare will be $18.

Basketball time

Recreation basketball registration for boys and girls in the third, fourth and fifth grades is under way, with Dec. 1 as the signup deadline. Forms may be returned to city hall or to the Americus Grade School office. Members are needed for the Americus Recreation Organization board. Letters of application may be sent to Box 526, Americus.

Junior high girls basketball

The Lady Indians will play all home games beginning at 4:30 p.m. The schedule: Nov.13, Osage City; Nov. 30, Mission Valley; Dec. 7, Council Grove.

At the library 

A Rosemary Wells character, “Max,” will visit the library at 1:30 p.m. Nov.16 at 1:30 p.m. At the event, for children ages 2 to 5, “Bunny Cakes” will be read. There will be no story time in the morning.

The Americus School students will visit the library during the week of Nov. 13 through 18.

Soccer tournament

Here are  the results of the recent soccer tournament held in Americus. Comets, coached by Rick Hamlin, gold; North Lyon County, coached by Ethan Jenkins, silver; Kickers, coached by Linda Houston, bronze, for the U-6 squad. The U-8 results were Americus, coached by Ron Johnson, gold; North Lyon County, coached by Todd Nettleton, silver. The U-10 results were Turbos, coached by Arnie Anderson, gold; North Lyon County, coached by Carey and Stacy Ogleby, silver; and Jaycats, coached by Fred Johnson, bronze. 

Antique car club

A recent chili surprise supper was attended by Emporia Antique Car Club members Jim and Ralphea Hill, Bob and Betty Foster, Larry and Ann Mallon, Dale and Belle Grimsley, John and Peggy Mast, Gene and Donna Otis, Barney and Helen Messersmith, Clarence and Verla Howland, Larry and Pat Howard, Eddie Spielbusch, and Don and Opal Glasgow. Because of bad weather, the event was moved from the Americus City Park to the Grimsley Garage at the corner of Main and Locust streets.

Raffle winners

Winners of the Americus Days raffle were: surround sound stereo, Rodger Ernst; MP3 Player, Dawn Porter; and grill, C. R. Theas.

Parade winners

Bicycle winners were Randal Karr and Allie Houston. Best pet and owner winners were Pat Sutton and Shannon Ernst; Judges’ choice,  (1) Bubbles float driven by Richard Keeling and sponsored by the Emporia Area Retired School Personnel, (2) Miniature train driven by Charles Schubert; Best float, (1) Sunflower 4-H, (2) KansasLand Bank; Best antique tractor or machinery, (1) corn husker, Bruce Anderson, (2) John Deere, Tim Finney; Best dressed horse and rider, (adult), (1) Kevin Browning, (2) Jolisa Lane; Best dressed horse and rider (under 16), (1) Kelsy Bosh, (2) Kale and Keely Lane; Classic car or truck, (1) Barney Messersmith, (2) Don Glasgow.
