New restaurant

A new restaurant, Styx, has opened at Fourth Avenue and Merchant Street in the building formerly occupied by the Fourth Avenue Dining Co.

Styx is owned by Virgil Patterson, owner of Three Fools’ Cafe in the 10 block of East Sixth Avenue.

Patterson said the restaurant, open from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, is a fine-dining restaurant with an emphasis on high-end Italian food. It opened without fanfare on Oct. 26.

“It’s Emporia’s hot new number,” he said.

Patterson had been preparing to open a new restaurant in the former fraternity house at 10th Avenue and Constitution Street, but was not able to provide the customer parking required by city planners. He said he plans to keep that building as a personal project.

Styx has a staff of 11 people, including executive chef Jason Horowitz, whom Patterson said is an accomplished chef with worldwide experience.

The building has been completely remodeled, Patterson said, and Dennis Paul, a former art teacher with the Emporia school district, did the decorating, including painting some wall murals.

Patterson said the restaurant can handle up to 100 diners a night and said reservations are suggested. The phone number is 343-7899.

A grand opening is set for Dec. 1. Patterson said that after the opening, he plans to expand the schedule to include a Sunday brunch.

To lead association

Don Sayler, a longtime certified public accountant in Emporia, is the new president-chief executive officer of the Kansas Restaurant and Hospitality Association.

The Topeka-based organization announced Sayler’s promotion, filling the office left by the resignation of Dennis Carpenter.

Sayler, who will head the KRHA and its affiliated companies, has been the association’s vice president-chief financial officer for more than four years. He previously spent 14 years as a CPA at SLW Business Services in Emporia and holds a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Emporia State University.

After Hours at inn

The White Rose Inn will be the site of the next Business After Hours event, set for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Reservations close Tuesday for the gathering, sponsored by the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The cost is $5 for chamber members and guests, $8 for non-members.

Reservations may be phoned to 342-1600 or completed online at www.emporiakschamber.org.
