5 area teams in title hunt heading into 2nd round

Saturday, November 4, 2006

The second round of the Class 4A through 8-Man State football playoffs begins today, and several area teams are still alive and in the thick of their respective title races.

The games are scattered throughout the day, with two area teams kicking off at 2 p.m.

Burlington travels to Caney to take on the 7-3 Bullpups in the Class 3A playoffs.

Burlington (8-2) advanced thanks to a 50-22 victory over Erie on Tuesday.

The other 2 p.m. game pits top-ranked Waverly (10-0) against Kensington (9-1) out in the northwest corner of the state in the 8-Man Division I playoffs.

Waverly must travel about 325 miles to Kensington, which lies about 75 miles north of Hays, making Waverly the most-traveled team in the State this weekend. Should Waverly survive Kensington, a matchup with the winner of the Madison versus Clifton-Clyde game would await.

Madison’s matchup with Clifton-Clyde begins at 2:30 p.m. in Madison, and should Madison win, it would mean the Bulldogs would possibly get the chance at avenging their only loss of the season — a 38-12 setback at the hands of Waverly on Sept. 29.

In Class 2-1A, Olpe (10-0) will look to remain perfect on the season when it meets up with Uniontown (9-1) at 6 p.m. in Olpe.

This season, Olpe has recorded five shutouts, and nearly had another on Tuesday against Solomon. The Eagles won, 61-8, with the lone Solomon touchdown coming by way of an Olpe fumble in the end zone late in the fourth quarter.

Rounding out the area games is Lyndon at Centralia — a battle of two 6-4 squads — slated to begin at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of the Olpe-Uniontown matchup.

Check out Monday’s Gazette to see how all the area teams fared, as well as catch all the rest of the scores from around the state.
