The first wave of Lyon County property tax statements should be in the mail on Monday, according to information from County Clerk Karen Hartenbower. The rest of the statements are expected to be mailed on Tuesday.
Hartenbower said that the statements, usually sent to property-owners the first of November, were late this year because of several factors. Greenwood County was late getting values to Lyon County to include for those whose property extends over the county line, the City of Bushong wanted to change its levy and found it could not, Homestead Tax changes were made by the state and caused a delay, and some computer re-programming needed to be done because of changes in handling 16-20M truck valuations.
“It just all snowballed and now we’re going to be a little later than usual,” Hartenbower said.
The tax rolls list has been run and 22,000 statements were produced Wednesday. The County Treasurer’s department will work over the weekend to make sure the statements are in the mail the first part of the week.
“We don’t want the public to think that we’re holding them back because of the election,” Hartenbower said.
Also during Lyon County commission meeting:
- Commissioners Myron VanGundy and Bob Davis approved the rezoning of the property at 1505 Road 175 for a church. VanGundy made the motion and Davis seconded it. The church will be New Life Christian Church of Emporia.

Please hand deliver my statement to the guy in the Waffle House on Saturday - any Saturday. I don't have a mailbox, but I do have property.
