Florida writer talks at Gridley

Author Ann Haw Holt of Florida will talk about writing and give readings from her fiction and poetry at 7 p.m. Monday at the Gridley Branch of Coffey County Library. There will be a book signing after the program.

Holt has written four family western novels with Kansas settings. The most recent, “Riding Fences,” is set near Severy and, according to the press release, “evokes a clear image of cattle land, gun stock and saddle leather.”

Her books, including “Silver Creek,” “Kendrick” and “Blanco Sol,” are available for check out at the Gridley library.

As part of the Veterans Tribute Week, Don Coldsmith will talk about “How the Bomb Changed Our Lives” at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Emporia Public Library. The library will be closed on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Bookmark contest returns

The Friends of the Emporia Public Library announce the seventh annual Bookmark Design Contest for all ages. Entry forms have been delivered to all area schools and are also available at the library and through the library’s Web site at www.emporialibrary.org.

This year’s contest is “special,” as it ties to the upcoming Emporia Sesquicentennial Celebration — the city’s 150th anniversary. Entrants are asked to focus on what makes Emporia special — yesterday, today and tomorrow.

There are seven categories: Preschool-kindergarten; grades 1-2; grades 3-4; grades 5-6; grades 708; grades 9-12; and adults, ages 18 and older. A winner will be selected in each category, with an eighth winner, the “Mayor’s Choice,” also selected. Each winner will be honored and awarded at $25 cash gift at the City’s 150th Birthday Party at the Civic Auditorium on Feb. 20, 2007.

The bookmark can be done with colored pencils, markers or pens. Participants may submit as many entries as they like. The artist should include a quote on what they think is special about Emporia yesterday, today or tomorrow.

Winning designs will be reproduced in full color and distributed at the library every two weeks after the February award ceremony. The deadline for entry is Nov. 30.

Hispanic performer on stage for EAC

The Emporia Arts Council’s next show is Ruby Nelda Perez in “Dona Rosita’s Jalapeno Kitchen” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 in Sacred Heart Parish Hall.

Perez, an actress, soloist and comedienne, “will delight all with her rich array of characters,” said the news release. “Weaving English, Spanish and Spanglish together, Ruby Nelda Perez brings a comical performance with a tender vulnerability.”

There will be three outreach activities, including performances for elementary schools.

Book group talks “Bee Season”

The Emporia Public Library book discussion series for Fall 2006 concludes with the novel, “Bee Season” by Myla Goldberg.

Multiple copies of the book are available at the library for checkout. The discussion will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 in the large meeting room of the library, 110 E. Sixth Ave. For questions or comments, call Lynette Olson at 340-6451 or e-mail: olsonlyn@emporialibrary.org.
