WWII roundtable features ESU alum

Thursday, November 2, 2006

The Emporia State University World War II Roundtable will hold its fall meeting on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Kanza Room. The speaker will be ESU alumnus Lieutenant Colonel Robert A. Mott. His subject will be “Recollections of the ‘Good’ War.”

Mott served in World War II as a paratrooper in the 82nd and 17th Airborne divisions and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. Before the war, he was a member of Company B, 137th Infantry, 35th Division of the Kansas National Guard, which was called to active duty a year before Pearl Harbor. He is a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.

This is Mott’s second campus appearance this semester, following a September appearance on the history and future of communications. That presentation related to Mott’s long career in broadcasting, during which he became one of the founders of National Public Radio.

He was named an ESU distinguished alumni in 1978.

The ESU World War II Roundtable is sponsored by the ESU Alumni Association, Department of Social Science, Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, Pi Gamma Mu Social Sciences Honor Society and the Lyon County Historical Museum and Archives.

Two earlier roundtables were held last spring. One focused on the Japanese army’s perspective of World War II while another dealt with the U.S. bomber “Memphis Belle.”
