Investigation of shooting continues

Thursday, November 2, 2006

Investigation is continuing into a shooting of a Wichita woman who was hospitalized after being shot in Emporia on Monday night.

Bronta Costello of Wichita was initially treated at Newman Regional Health before being flown to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

The shooting was reported at Sixth Avenue and Sherman Street. Lavell Williams of Wichita, who had been traveling with Costello, told police they had stopped their car to ask a man if there was someplace open where they could eat. Williams then told police that the man pulled out a handgun, shot Costello and demanded money.

Williams then told police he pulled the gun from the man’s hands and the man ran away. Williams said he then put Costello in the passenger seat and drove to the area of the Sixth Ave. Taco Bell, where he reached an off-duty Lyon County Corrections officer and asked him for help. The officer led Williams to Newman.

Deputy Police Chief Mike Williams, no relation, said this morning that the suspect was determined to be a black male approximately 6-feet tall with a slender build and is believed to have been wearing dark clothing including a dark gray or black jacket and a stocking cap.

Police are still investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Emporia police investigations at 343-4200 or Lyon County Crime Stoppers at 342-CARE.

Is this the same person that has been doing all the robberies in Emporia? Is the E.P.D. going to try and catch this person? We citizens of Emporia require justice.
