Toy Shoppe collecting

The Toy Shoppe is ready for another year of collecting and repairing used toys.     

Collection barrels have been placed at Reeble’s North, Reeble’s South, Dillons, Wal-Mart, Price Chopper, Family Video and the downtown fire station. Large items will be picked up if prior arrangements are made.

The Toy Shoppe is a program of the Flint Hills Special Education Cooperative in which students clean and repair toys to redistribute to children in the community. Students also collect new toys which are included in the distribution. The Toy Shoppe is in the north end of Mary Herbert Education Center , 1700 W. Seventh Ave.

All types of toys that can be refurbished are needed. This includes dolls, stuffed animals and small children’s bicycles. The Toy Shoppe does not accept any toy weapons.

The program will provide up to two toys per child per month and one bicycle per family each year. Parents can come to the Toy Shoppe between 8:15 and 11 a.m. and noon to 3:15 p.m. on days that school is in session. The entrance is located on the north side of Mary Herbert.

Rosean Club

The Rosean Club will be hosts for the annual Thanksgiving dinner at 6:30 p.m. today in Fremont Township Hall. Guests are to take either vegetables, salads or desserts and table service. Members will provide turkey with trimmings. Everyone in the community is invited.

May Kay for Parkinson’s

A Mary Kay Holiday Shopping Night will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Wyndam Place Apartments meeting room, 1401 E. 12th Ave. The hostess will be Shirlee Ebberts. Thirty percent of the money raised will benefit the Emporia Parkinson’s Support Group. There will be gifts for men and women and stocking stuffers, in all price ranges. Bring a friend and get a free gift. RSVPs may be made by calling Patti Lipson, (620) 794-4148.

Benefit concert for Nathaniel Pearson

A benefit concert for Nathaniel Pearson is planned for 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at My Place Too, 19 E. Sixth Ave. There will be a $6 cover charge with all door receipts being donated to Pearson’s family to help with medical expenses.

Pearson, who suffers from a rare blood-clotting disorder, was recently hospitalized for severe infections.

Emporia bands playing Friday night include driVen, healmejohnredcorn, M-Theory, and The Elegant. Also playing will be Space for Rent from Lebo and Ellipses from Lawrence. Soup supper, bazaar

The Miller United Methodist Women will have the annual soup supper and bazaar at the church, with serving beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The menu will feature homemade vegetable soup, chili, hot dogs or chili dogs, pie, tea or coffee.

Buddy Poppies

Volunteer workers for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1980 Auxiliary will have their annual Buddy Poppy drive on Saturday.

Profits from donations to the drive are used to support services for military veterans, including maintaining state and national rehabilitation and service programs. The poppy sales also help support the VFW National Home for Orphans and Widows.

Biscuits and gravy

A Biscuits and Gravy Breakfast will be held from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Messiah Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. Also being served with will be pancakes, juice, milk or coffee. Cost for the breakfast is $4 a person. Children 12 and under eat for half-price. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit the mission projects of the Lutheran Laymen’s League.

Last penny supper of the year

The Hartford United Methodist Women will have the last Penny Supper of 2006, with serving to begin at 5 p.m. Saturday. Some of the foods served will be ham loaf, chicken pie, port cutlets and many delicious side dishes. Foods are different prices, with proceeds used for church causes. The next Penny Supper will be Feb. 3, 2007.

Methodist fall festival

The Americus United Methodist Church annual Fall Festival will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The menu includes baked steak with gravy, mashed potatoes, vegetable, salad, roll and homemade desserts. The cost for adults is $6; $3 for children 4-10; and three and younger, free. There also will be a program and the Country Store will be open. Proceeds go to the church general fund.

Taco supper at Rapids

The Neosho Rapids PTO is serving a Taco Supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Neosho Rapids Elementary School. Tickets are $5 in advance or $6 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the Neosho Rapids Elementary School, Hartford High School, Hartford State Bank or by calling Bettina Shank at (620- 366-1015 after 5 p.m. or by e-mailing to shankbet@hotmail.com. A meal includes two tacos, rice, chips, cheese, dessert and beverage.

Allen harvest dinner

A Harvest Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Allen United Methodist Church. The dinner includes barbecued brisket, scalloped potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, homemade rolls and homemade desserts. Free will offerings will be accepted.

Benefit for Katrina victims

A Cajun dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Skyline Dining Room at Emporia State University’s Memorial Union. Tickets for the dinner are $30 per person and may be purchased in the Union during business hours.

Proceeds from the event will go to New Orleans children’s programs as part of ESU’s Katrina Relief Week activities.
