Student honored

Emporia State University has awarded the Harold Durst Graduate Research Award for 2006-2007 to Andy Wolfe. Wolfe is currently working on his master’s degree in Biology with a concentration in Microbial and Cellular Biology through ESU’s Department of Biological Sciences. He will be honored at ESU’s 2007 Research and Creativity Forum April 12.

This award was created by Harold Durst, Ph.d to provide financial support for creative activities and research by graduate students. Durst was Dean of Graduate Studies and Research from 1974 to 1985. He passed away August 26, 1986. Wolfe will receive a cash stipend of $2086 which will enable him to complete the research necessary for his thesis and to graduate December 2007. Wolfe’s name will be added to the Harold Durst Graduate Research Award plaque on display in the Office of Graduate Studies.

Cajun dinner

Emporia State University is hosting its 2nd Annual Cajun Jubilation dinner to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims. The event will be held in the Memorial Union Skyline room, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. There will be a menu of Cajun food including red beans and rice, crawfish etouffee, jambalaya, boiled crawfish with potatoes, corn and sausage, seafood remoulade salad and hushpuppies prepared by ESU Chef Harold Jensen. Dessert will include King Cake and Bananas Foster. Beverages will also be provided. All proceeds from the dinner will go to a children’s recreation center in the Greater New Orleans area. Last year this event raised $3,053.07 for Hurricane Katrina victims. Tickets are $30 and are available for purchase at the ID/ticket booth office in the ESU Memorial Union. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. For more information contact Besty Yanik at eyanik@emporia.edu or 620-341-5291.

Physics organization

Emporia State University is now a member of the Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PTEC), a joint effort of the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association of Physics Teachers.

“ESU is very excited to be a part of this wonderful organization. We are grateful to join with others seeking to advance physics education as partners in the Physics Teacher Education Coalition,” said DeWayne Backhus, Professor and Chair, Departments of Physical Sciences.

The Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PTEC) is an association of physics departments dedicated to the improvement of K-12 physics and physical science teacher preparation. PTEC is an inclusive organization that recognizes the value of diverse approaches to the reform of teacher preparation and provides a forum for dissemination of innovative approaches and best practices in this field. The broad goals of PTEC include constructing bridges among physics departments, schools of education and school districts; engaging future teachers in inquiry-based science learning; and recognizing the continuum of efforts required to successfully train and support physics and physical science teachers. “We are impressed by your active work in physics education through both your graduate program in physical science teaching and your second field endorsement program. The workshops you provide your area are commendable, as are you initiatives to improve preservice education,” said Mary Fehrs, associate project director for PhysTEC Coalition Development.
