Emporia will have a new police chief in 2007.
Police Chief Mike Heffron announced Tuesday that he will retire. His last day at EPD will be Dec. 16.
Heffron became chief on June 25, 2001. He began with EPD in September 1976 and worked his way up from patrol officer to field sergeant, police lieutenant and division commander. Before coming to EPD, he served three years as a security police officer for the U.S. Air Force. He served a total of 23 years in the military, retiring from the Kansas Air National Guard with the rank of senior master sergeant.
The chief, a native Emporian, said he plans to move to Albuquerque, N.M., and help his oldest son, Michael, in his wholesale automobile business.
Heffron turned in his resignation to Mark McAnarney, acting city manager, and told the police department staff on Tuesday afternoon. Heffron said any plans for an interim chief would likely come from McAnarney.
As for a possible timetable to fill the top cop position, Heffron said that could wait until the city commission hires a new city manager.
“I suspect they will wait until a city manager is hired and let him hire the chief of police,” Heffron said.
