Emporia advertises for city manager
Wednesday, November 1, 2006
Emporia has begun advertising for its new city manager, Mayor Jim Kessler said Wednesday.
The job is advertised with a starting salary of $100,000 to $120,000. Candidates must have at least a bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration or a related field, although an advanced degree is desirable. The ad calls for 10 years of “progressively responsible” experience in public administration, including five years as a manager or executive.
Those applying are also expected to have broad knowledge of city and fiscal management, economic development, public safety, diversity issues and intergovernmental relations.
The ad will circulate this month in the print publications of the National League of Cities and the League of Kansas Municipalities; the web and print publications of the Public Sector Job Bulletin and the International City/County Management Association; and the Web site www.govjobs.com. City officials submitted the ad on Tuesday.
Kessler said there is no formal cutoff date for applications. According to the ad, the city will begin to review resumes on Dec. 15.
Holiday’s half-acre
As of Wednesday, all of Holiday Resort is now inside the city limits.
About a half-acre of the care center’s property had spilled over into the county, something that city GIS technician Becky Samuelson caught while going over maps. Emporia city commissioners voted Wednesday afternoon to stretch the city boundaries and include that sliver of land.
“So whoever was living in the last room on that wing will now be able to vote in the city,” Commissioner Tom Myers joked.
In other action, commissioners:
F Proclaimed Nov. 5 through Nov. 13 as “All Veterans Tribute Week” and Nov. 11 as “Veterans Day.” Emporia is the founding city of Veterans Day, holding the first observance in 1953. It became a national holiday in 1954.
F Proclaimed Nov. 4 “Buddy Poppy Day.” Buddy poppies are sold by the VFW each year to supported disabled and needy veterans, along with the widows and orphans of deceased veterans.
F Presented certificates of appreciation for city employees who had worked 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years. About 23 employees were recognized this year, with Margaret Hanson of the accounting department and Rick Hinson of the sanitation department topping the list at 30 years.
F Put off a discussion of the heating and cooling systems at the library until updated figures are available.
F Met for 30 minutes in executive session to discuss an attorney-client matter and to discuss non-elected personnel.

Outstanding. I would like to announce that the position has likely been filled. I, Merle Crimbatt, am far superior to any other potential candidates and thus must be given the position of city manager. My qualifications are: I can tell the difference between butter and 'I can't believe it's not butter,' and I never change temperature (inside (me)). Once I'm in charge things are gonna be different, that's for sure. All city residents are required to be present at City Hall Friday night for 'Crimbatt Re-Education.' Also, anyone caught wearing hats or on go carts will be incarcerated for a minor (but pleasant) time. Look for an edict soon. Sincerely Merle "The Marlin" Crimbatt

I don't know who you think you are but this aint the place for grandstanding or crazy shennigans! What does I Can't Believe It's Not Butter have to do with local polotics??? Im also not fond of your idea of not werring a hat. The only time I take off my hat is for bed, church, or the national anthum. You can have my hat when you pull it off my cold, dead, head! If you are sereous about wanting this job what are your qualafactions (if you have any at all!).
