County sales tax collections rise in 2006

Friday, December 29, 2006

Lyon County’s sales tax collection is up above last year’s collection, Chairman Marshall Miller told the Lyon County Commission on Thursday afternoon.

Through November, the county had collected $1.67 million, Miller said.

“We’re going to be 1 1/2 percent above last year’s collections,” Miller said.

Miller also reported that during the meeting that the commission has authorized a $1,500 expenditure for a trade-in dog for the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. Rex, a malanois from Holland will replace Toro, a malanois that was purchased this year. Toro has proven too aggressive, Miller said. Toro was assigned to Deputy Cory Doudican and made $22,000 in drug seizures, Miller said.

“He’s a good drug dog, but when it comes to attack, he’s somewhat out of control,” Miller said. “That’s not good for the liability of the county.”

The county retired another drug dog earlier this year because of injuries.

Other items on Thursday’s agenda:

• Commissioners accepted an offer from G.W. Van Keppel Co. to keep a 2006 Volvo Grader instead of a 2007 model at a $10,000 reduction in price.

• Commissioners authorized a weight reduction on a timber culvert on Road E west of town. The weight was reduced to three tons until it can be replaced.
